Positive Behavior Support A Positive Take on Discipline
By Christi Chisum and Matthew McClain
“As Baker students, we pledge to Be responsible with a positive Attitude, using Kindness, Effort, and Respect.”
This pledge can be heard each morning after the pledge of allegiance.
Baker School is embarking on a new adventure with implementing the PBS (positive behavior support) discipline model. The main focus of the PBS model is positive praise for good behaviors and focusing on those students who will follow the BAKER rules. This focus is then on the majority of the students who are exhibiting the proper behaviors, but also dealing with negative behaviors when they arise. Much data has been collected around the country that shows a dramatic decrease in negative behaviors once PBS is implemented school-wide. The PBS team is comprised of a teacher from each pod, a resource room teacher, a parent, a counselor, an administrator, an instructional coach, a school psychologist, and a specials teacher. This team spent time this summer creating a behavior expectation teaching matrix as well as lesson plans for each behavior expectation.
The positive behavior model outlines positive behaviors and expectations for students and teachers in various settings throughout the school. Teachers at Baker have been busy teaching these lessons on examples of responsibility, respect, effort, and kindness. Some of the lessons include role playing, what if situations, journaling, and videos. Teachers and staff are seeing many positive results within the first few weeks of school.
